Plant-eating behaviourPlaty is an omnivorous fish with a significant plant component in its diet: in nature, it feeds on algae and plant debris, and in the aquarium, it readily scrapes off algae growth and may nip at soft, tender plant leaves, so it is recommended to provide it with plant-based food and choose hardy plants (anubias, echinodorus, crypts).
Interaction with invertebratesOmnivorous and readily preys on small invertebrates: in nature, it feeds on aquatic and terrestrial insects and crustaceans, and in the aquarium, it may hunt small shrimp and other tiny invertebrates, although it is relatively peaceful towards larger shrimp and snails.
Incompatible groupsPlaties are peaceful and non-territorial, so they do not get along well with large, aggressive, or predatory fish (large cichlids, large barbs), as well as active fin-nipping species (e.g., danios, tetras), which may bite their fins and cause stress.
