Betta splendens

Betta, or fighting fish (Betta splendens), is one of the most popular aquarium fish worldwide. It is a bright labyrinth fish from Southeast Asia, known for strong intraspecific aggression and territoriality. Thanks to its labyrinth organ, it can breathe atmospheric air, allowing it to survive in oxygen-poor waters. In nature, it inhabits stagnant and slow-moving waters of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Breeders have developed over 70 breeds differing in coloration and fin shape. Males are larger and more colorful than females, with ornate fins. They breed by building a bubble nest, which the male cares for.
